This is a story about an elderly woman who was having problems with her hot water tank (water heater is the professional term) and since she was a part of facebook, she reached out to help others in finding a way to solve her problem.

With the help of numerous friends in the social media atmosphere, this woman was able to get her water heater issue resolved through the willful help of others reaching out to make a bad situation turn good.

ELYRIA -- When 82-year-old Jean Evans needed help with her hot water tank, she asked a neighbor.

It ended up taking the world-wide web and some special Facebook friends to solve the problem.

Jean Evans had a nagging hot water tank problem since January. The 31-year-old appliance simply gave out. Bringing herself to do something about it was slow going.

"Being alone, you get to the point you don't care anymore and that's not good," Evans said.

"The cost of a hot water tank and its installation is about what Jean makes a month on Social Security. What seemed impossible for the one to pay proved to be no problem for the many.

Brandon Rutherford heard Evans' dilemma and sent the message to his friends on Facebook, who passed it along to all of their friends....and so on....

"That's why social media is there. It's not just to say, 'Oh look, I can join this group today, yippee.'"

"It's where you can actually meet up with somebody and say I need this or that...can you help me?" Rutherford said.

Offers came from all over the state. Some willing to give money, others willing to give their time.

"Phenomenal. It is nice to have people still care and they're not so greedy," Evans said.

Four days later Evans has a new hot water tank. It was installed Thursday afternoon free of charge.

While social media is a still a mystery to Jean, she has certainly learned the value of it.

Now if she could just get her computer fixed, she too, just might be your Facebook friend.
