A good repeat customer of ours contacted us regarding the replacement of a water softener. We had been to this customer's home about 4 months prior in regards to the existing water softener not working properly.

When we looked at the water softener, the unit was approximately 9-10 years old, dating to the age of the house when it was built. No maintenance of this water softener had been done during this time.

We did a brief diagnostic, set the softener to regenerate and raised the hardness level to see if this would help solve the problem. Initially this did bring a result but soon after it went back to not functioning properly.

I explained to the customer that with the age of the water softener and the guarantee that a new unit offers, it would be in their best financial interest to replace, rather than repair. This way the expenses involved guarantee the ability that if the unit malfunctions in the next few years, expenses will be covered and the more current design/technology is in place for their benefit.

With a repair, of course this can resolve an issue that is causing the unit not to function properly but there are no guarantees of "another" part failure to soon follow. A chain reaction can ensue with money being spent each and every time...one trip to diagnose, one trip again to install repair parts. With a plumber involved in this equation it will become expensive in this fashion.

This is where the costs of replacing become more feasible than the cost of repairing.

Here is the water softener that we replaced, along with the new water softener that was installed, picked by the property owner. The property owners had the new water softener sitting next to the new one to be installed to save plumber time in this task.

Here is the cardboard panel of parts that comes with your water softener along with a closeup of the bypass for the water supply of the softener.
