A repeat customer of ours from last year called us a couple weeks ago regarding a floor drain that was backing up in the home no matter what fixture was used.

We arrived and looked over the situation, attempted to clear the drain through the floor drain that was backing up. After 3 repeated attempts we returned no positive results and when looking outside to locate the tank, it was more than obvious that wastewater had surfaced to the ground level and was draining on top of the ground.

Since the house was just bought recently, no history of the drainage system was available. In any home purchase it is important that you inspect plumbing systems such as these, especially private sewage systems as those have more conditions that can lead to expensive repairs.

Upon my instruction I explained to the customer that a pumping of the tank is necessary to do a clean slate mindset of thinking to see what exactly the problem is. The drain line leading from the house was already thoroughly cleaned by our numerous attempts with the drain cleaning machine.

A septic pumping service arrived, tank lid was removed and tank was pumped. Line was clean from house to front side of septic tank, the line that was our responsibility to clean. It was found by discovery that the line leading from the septic tank to the distribution box was heavily clogged, completely jammed full of waste. Being that it was solid, recommendation of replacement of the pipe given how old the piping was made for the best suggestion in resolving the issue.

The two tasks just mentioned above came in around $400 but at least this customer had the now crucial knowledge that

1. Sewer line has been properly cleaned
2. Septic tank has been properly cleaned
3. Problem area has been diagnosed
4. These "one time" issues should be resolved and not recreate for many years

The customer decided to task the pipe replacement himself with the help of others that live with him to save on the expense. Dunbar Plumbing offered as a courtesy when this project begins to offer some advice so the job gets done properly without recreating another problem. The customer instantly appreciated that kind gesture and that little effort goes a long ways. The customer is less than 2 miles from the shop so that was another factor why we was willing to offer the help.

When the time comes and the customer takes us up on the advice, we'll take pictures of the job.
