Dunbar Plumbing was called out to a home on Raymonde Lane in Erlanger Kentucky, Brightleaf subdivision.

Customer worked on kitchen sink drain clog for two days before contacting us, and was able to free up the clog that was in close proximity to the kitchen sink initially, but the clog then moved to the groundwork of the drain piping that was 20 feet away.

This piping also connected to a washing machine drain and a freestanding laundry tub in the basement, which is where a great deal of the backup went when the clog moved down the drain system. Read more...

Once this occurred, the job changed into a more involved task, meaning equipment to properly access and clear the drain piping.

We used  our Spartan Model 81 drum machine and accessed the line at the trap of the freestanding laundry tub and had some difficulty at first from keeping the cable from riding up the vent piping. After a few methodical tries the drain cable went downwards and attacked the clog that was sitting inside the piing.

We took a couple cracks by running the cable back and forth through the drain, then requested the property owner on the first floor to run the sink drain. Using hydropressure instantly helped in aiding the drain piping clog along, eventually running/breaking free.

Having the cable moving/turning during this time is ideal as it slowly works well in combination with the water movement to move whatever waste was sitting in the pipe out to the main sewer line.

This home has an island sink which is notorious for being problematic. It configures of a loop back to the drain for the vent, and that short distance does not give the piping the correct amount of air movement to keep it functioning like a normally vented drain pipe.

The drain was ran in 1.5" SCH40 PVC which is code requirement, but 2" would be a far better design given a great deal of these island sinks have garbage disposals as well.

Once we were assured the drain piping that was clogged was completely opened, we reset the pvc tubular trap on the laundry tub and ran multiple fixtures to "flood" the piping, take the remaining buildup away.

Customer was pleased given we came out late (8:30pm) to resolve the problem so the next day went without worry.
