Later today I'm cutting out the base of a galvanized drain system serving a 2nd floor kitchen sink drain.

Going to be cold, going to SUCK, and the only thing I want out of this is something worthy/good for the

property owner so he can bide some time.



Anyone put up with a fight with galvanized and actually thought it was worth the effort? Cast Iron can

wreak the same havoc as well.

How did your pipe job go ?   Was it a job from hell ?

I thought it was going to suck, but turned out quite easy. I busted open that ceiling and exposed the piping and found a wye that served both the tub and the main kitchen drain stack. When I ran my cable through the opposite direction back to the configuration, I was running up the tub drain vent instead of the kitchen sink drain.

Used a sawzall with a carbide-fused blade, made 3 cuts since the blade was cutting good and I was cutting where the threads were. Removed a 45 along with a 90, used 3 mission no-hub couplings. 2 to rejoin the piping and one to cover the hole I didn't want to remove in the pipe so I can run a cable vertical up without having to fight the downward force of gravity. The small hole works as a threaded hole and makes that task much better.

Had a really hard time keeping my hands warm through the short time I was in that garage. I left to get parts, home depot does not have banded couplings anymore. Went to Lowes, had to cheat and switch rubbers inside the couplings from copper to regulars. Paid more but it wasn't that much more in price.

Shots of the inside of this galvanized piping. The goal through the direction of the property owner was to remedy the issue the most inexpensive way possible.

For plumbers, this is a no brainer, we expect this sort of thing. The clog was concentrated heavily in this bend.
